What about money to buy things? Patients in the adolescent program should bring $20-$40 for weekend outings. Adult patients may need more than that - enough money to cover the "fun outing" on weekends as well as trips to Wal-Mart or Target for personal items. Patients are allowed to go on weekend outings only when they are medically stable and have approval from their treatment team, usually by the second or third weekend.
Can I bring fun stuff to do in the evenings? Definitely. You'll have time to relax and unwind with movies, DVDs, computer games, arts and crafts, books (non eating disorder), musical instruments, knitting and crocheting tools, etc. Laureate offers the use of Its libraries, craft rooms, video/DVD collections and games.
How is laundry handled? You do your own laundry. We supply Tide. If you have an allergy to Tide, let us know so we can make other arrangements.
What kind of clothes should I pack? We suggest pajama pants, jeans, wind pants, etc. Bring a light jacket for daytime and dressier clothes for weekend outings. Patients who have weight to restore should bring a variety of sizes to wear. You will not be able to wear shorts, capris or sleeveless tops until you are in your weight range. We often ask patients to surrender their "sick clothes" before they leave. This helps take away the trigger and temptation to fit back into them.
What about bringing my medications? Bring enough with you to last through admission. While you are in the program, our on-campus pharmacy will dispense medications. When you reach the partial care level, we will return your medications to you. If you are on any type of birth control, continue using your own throughout your stay.
What happens if I get sick while in your program? For minor illnesses, our capable nursing and medical staff will care for you. Should you require additional care, you will have direct access to the physicians and specialists of Saint Francis Hospital. Laureate is part of the Saint Francis Health System, and is located 1/5 mile from the main hospital.
What should I pack, besides my clothes? Whatever makes you feel comfortable and at home while you're here. Bring your own comforter and blankets, posters, pictures (no glass in the frame), stuffed animals, laptops, cell phones (adults only), radios, etc. Some items may be kept at the nurses' station at first.
Can I send and receive mail or use the phone? Yes. You may send and receive mail (bring your own stamps or purchase them from the Laureate volunteers). You will be given a code number for receiving incoming calls. You can make calls to anyone, but Laureate will connect only incoming calls from people who have your code number. Adult patients may use their cell phones during phone times. Internet access is also available during phone time.
